Zakimi Castle was built between 1416 and 1422 by Ryukyuan commander Gosamaru. It was erected in Yomitan, on a hill approximately 125 meters above sea level that oversaw the northern portion of central Okinawa. Nowadays, only the walls and foundations of the castle remain, and were named World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. Zakimi Castle is one of the most sophisticated castles of Okinawa for the techniques used to build its walls. Assembled in the shape of waves, the walls have curved lines and were carefully part of a thoughtful plan to create a resistant structure to face the hardest war times. The structure of the walls and the gate (the oldest arch-shaped gate in Okinawa) are unique and can be found only in Zakimi Castle. The ruins are surrounded by a very well maintained and relaxing park with a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors climbing up to the top of the castle can enjoy an incredible view. On clear sky days, it is possible to see Shuri Castle in Naha city and even Cape Zanpa. Even though the castle ruins are not very big, visiting Zakimi Catle Ruins can be a great way to make a quick detour when passing through the area.
