Cape Hedo is the northernmost tip of Okinawa Island and is a 2.5 hours drive from Naha city. Mainly covered by forests and hills and mostly inhabited, this part of the island offers a beautiful coastal scenery where the two oceans merge: the South China Sea on the West, and the Pacific Ocean on the East. Like the rest of Yanbaru, the northern part of Okinawa Island, also the surroundings of Cape Hedo are wild: a lot of nature a very few buildings. The view from the promontory is stunning in every season. In autumn and winter, the waves of the ocean are very strong, and crush violently on the vertical cliffs. During the winter season, it is even possible to spot humpback whales emerging from the surface of the water. In summer, the water is mostly calm, with a great transparency. The air is very clear as well: on sunny days, it is possible to see Kagoshima prefecture and Yoronjima appearing on the horizon. Did you Know? In Cape Hedo, there are several monuments, the most important one being the monument erected in 1972 to commemorate the end of US occupation and return of Okinawa to Japanese sovereignty. Cape Hedo is one of the most appreciated places by locals where to watch the New Year's sunrise and pray for peace. You will be able to park your vehicle in a large free or charge parking slot. Next to it, you will find public toilets and a shop selling some food and drinks. Apart from that, you will just find a large natural area, with small trails cutting through the vegetation. Because of its distance from Naha city, Cape Hedo is not a frequent visit even for locals. However, we suggest you to go there at least once. Cape Hedo is not only a cape with a great view on the sea. It is also a very symbolic place, where you will feel at one with Okinawa's beauty, its difficult history, and the strong message of peace that its people wants to convey to the world.
