Komaka Island, a small uninhabited island off the southeastern cost of Okinawa Island, is exactly how you imagine a deserted island: a white beach, a few rocks, some vegetation, and nothing else! This small piece of land is actually a great destination for a day trip centered around snorkeling, sunbathing, and relaxing! Follow us in our day trip to this small 800 meters in circumference paradise! The only way to get to Komaka Island is with the boat of the Chinen Marine Leisure Center. For the price of 2,500 yen, you will get a nice 10-minutes trip to the island. The departure is from the little harbour of the Leisure Center, here is the address: Kudeken-676 Chinen, Nanjo, Okinawa 901-1400 The boat can bring a maximum of 12 passengers per time, and usually there are two boats departing every 20 minutes. Based on the availabilty on the day, it is possible to book the time you prefer for the return, making your stay on the island as long as you wish. Before the departure, it is also possible to rent snorkeling equipment, swimsuits, fins, maks, umbrellas and other services to enjoy the island in the best way. Have you always dreamt of having a BBQ on a inunhabited island? Well, this is your occasion! Once you get on the boat, wear your lifejacket and get ready for the departure! The boat will start to move slowly and the captain will then announce when they will increase the speed. The ride is very pleasant, with a nice sea breeze and view of the coast. When arriving on Komaka Island, make sure you wear a pair of shoes that you don't mind getting wet, as the gangway connecting the port with the beach can be half in the water, depending on the tide. The staff on the island will welcome you warmly and help you get on the island. Be prepared: in Komaka Island there is... nothing! The only artificial elements you will find are a little stand offering some activities, and a building with toilets on the top of a small hill. The rest of the island is just rock formations, a beautiful beach, and the clear water surrounding it. It is a good idea to bring some drinks and snacks, as there is no shop or vending machine on the island. There is a swimmable area near to where the boat arrives. The water is extremely clear and plenty of fish swimming around! While there is no poisonous fish or dangerous sea creatures to worry about, the guide will explain you that some species of fish tend to bite, and it is better to keep an eye on them if they approach you. Hopefully, they are easy to recognize, as they have very bright colors. We spotted a few of those fish, but they didn't seem to care about us at all. We rented a snorkeling equipment at the Leisure Center and had a blast swimming together with many colorful tropical fish! In a summer day, the sun might get really hot on this island. While there are many shadow spots created by the rock formations, we definitely recommend to bring plenty of suncream and to wear a hat. Also long sleeves and trousers can help you prevent a painful suburn. That's it. Komaka Island is small and there is not much more to describe in this article! But this does not mean that the island is not worth your visit. It is actually the opposite! After enjoying this small paradise, just take the boat back to the harbor. If you need to get changed, there are facilities in the Chinen Marine Leisure Center. The atmosphere in Komaka is really special. Being it so small and also uninhabited, makes you feel like having just discovered a tropical paradise. Definitely recommended!
