So you will be travelling in Okinawa, or at least you are interested in it. Well, first of all, congratulations for the great choice! Our island will delight you with its paradise beaches, historical monuments, and busy modern districts. Like every traveller, you want to make sure to arrive prepared, not only mentally, but also with the right equipment! Here are 5 tips on how to enjoy Okinawa in the safest and most comfortable way: 1. Dress like a local. Weather in Okinawa can get really really hot. If you are travelling to our beautiful island from May to October, it is highly recommended to wear sunglasses, put suncream, and wear a hat. If necessary, you can also bring a sun umbrella. Sun in Okinawa is no joke, and heatstroke is something that you definitely want to avoid. Also, being surrounded by the sea, the island is quite windy throughout the year. Even though this can be a positive thing, as it makes the heat more bearable, it is actually dangerous, as it will not make you feel the sun burning your skin. For a safe and pleasant summer journey, make sure you bring all the necessary sun protections! Better safe than sorry, right? 2. Wear the right shoes. Depending on what attractions you would like to visit, wearing the right shoes can definitely save your day. There is nothing worse that finding yourself in the middle of a visit and realize that your feet hurt! Some areas of Okinawa, like Daisekirinzan or Sefa-Utaki have uneven walking path or even just rocks. A pair of comfortable walking or trekking shoes will be ideal for these visits. Also, while the majority of the beaches have soft golden sand, some of them have pointy rocks, like Mibaru Beach. If you have space in your luggage, make sure to bring some water sandals, so that you can explore the shallow waters without any pain. 3. Spray will become your best ally. Hot weather means mosquitoes, and Okinawa is no exception. Hopefully, you will arrive prepared and mosquitoes will not stand a chance against you! The island of Okinawa is covered by many subtropical forests and the warm temperature across the whole year make it a nice habitat for insects. Even areas with just a few vegetation can easily become annoying due to mosquitoes, like Bise Fukugi Tree Street or the wood of Shikinaen Royal Garden. If you are not one of those people that seem to be naturally protected from mosquitoes bites (lucky them), make sure to cover yourself in spray! 4. Swimsuit as your second skin. With the ocean on every direction, it is no surprise that the island of Okinawa has some amazing beaches. If you are exploring the island on your own (For example, with a rental car), you will surely come across some lovely swimmable areas. Resisting the temptation of stopping there for a while and jumping in the water might be hard, especially in hot days! So, why not always bringing with you a swimsuit and a towel? You can actually wear your swimsuit under your clothes. Of course, we recommend extra safety when deciding to swim somewhere. Not all beaches are swimmable and there are some rules to be respected. For a list of all the best beaches, and safety rules about swimming in Okinawa, here is a very useful link from Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau: 5. Stay Connected. When going around Okinawa, you definitely want to be connected to the internet. From internet browsing to map directions, from access to information about nearby restaurants to historic fact about the attractions you are visiting... nowadays, travelling without internet is not easy! In some areas, there is a free Wi-Fi network called Be Okinawa Free Wi-Fi. It usually is available in cities or near to some attractions. If you want to be always connected, a pocket Wi-Fi can be ideal for you! You might want to have a look at the shops inside the airport, as many of them offer interesting plans for the connectivity of your stay. Once you are connected, you might also want to download our App, called Okinawa Player! It is a very convenient App that will help you find nearby attractions and even book them directly! We hope that these 5 points have been of some help to you. Some of them might seem obvious, but we bet that at least a few of them were a helpful reminder! We look forward to seeing you around here!
