Gokoku Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the spirits of those killed in the war. It was built in 1367 by a Japanese monk as a companion of Naminoue Shrine and it served as a major temple for the Okinawa Kingdom. At the beginning of the 20th century, the shrine served as a worship place for the spirits of the soldiers who lost their lives in the Russo-Japanese War and the Sino-Japanese Wars. Nowadays, many visitors come to pray for the souls of civilian and military victims of the Battle of Okinawa. The name of the shrine literally means "Shrine for the protection of the nation". Gokoku Shrine is located in the center of Onoyama Park, in the city of Naha, and it is the biggest Shinto shrine of the island. Two big stone torii gates will guide visitors along the path that leads to the haiden, the main worship hall. Between the two gates, on the left, there are two monuments: The Disabled veterans spouse monument, and the Peace monument. Both statues want to convey a strong message of peace and to depict the horrors of the war. After passing the second gate, on the right, there is a monument dedicated to the 50th wedding anniversary of the Emperor and the Empress, who have visited the shrine in many occasions. Most of the shrine was destroyed in 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa. Many generous donations from across Okinawa Prefecture helped the shrine to be re-established in 1959, with the main hall being completed in 1965, the same year in which the Emperor and Empress visited the shrine for the ceremony. Did you Know? In the little shop inside the shrine, visitors will be able to purchase different kind of "omamori", a traditional lucky charm. Many of them will grant their owners with good fortune, safety from accidents, and also some good luck for married couples. The atmosphere in Gokoku Shrine is extremely calm and solemn. Its position, inside the park, makes it very quiet and surrounded by nature. A visit is definitely recommended, not only to pay respect to the victims of war, but also to have a relaxing walk outside the center of the city, which can sometimes become a bit too busy.
