With 100 acres covered in nature and more than 2000 plant species, the Southeast Botanical Gardens are an amazing green area to fully immerse yourself into a relaxing and natural environment that can please all five senses. The gardens are located in the central part of Okinawa Island, around 45 minutes by car from Naha International Airport. They are separated into two main areas: the Water Garden and the Botanical Garden. In the first, the vegetation is more dense, with rare exotic plants, palms, flowers and fruit trees. Instead, the Water Garden features three ponds with lotus blooms, carps, and where it is also possible to fish, with the catch and release method. The parking slot and the ticket office are exactly between the two gardens and it takes less than 5 minutes to go from one garden to the other. The southernmost pond of the Water Garden is famous for its lotus plants. Depending on the season, the lotus field in the pond will offer a different shape of the lotus flower. When we visited the garden, in July, the lotus were slightly past the full bloom, which is usually during the June rainy season. It was amazing to see them in their bright pink color. At the entrance of the Water Garden, visitors will find a souvenir shop, a cafe, and toilets. A great place where to take a quick break between the activities the garden offers. The park is quite big and there are also some uphill sections. But no worries! A shuttle bus runs around the park for visitors to jump on it and enjoy a comfortable ride. The park is full of petting areas where to get in contact with many animals! There are goats, pigs, monkeys, capybaras, rabbits and many more. It is possible to pet them and also to feed them. If the Water Garden will get too hot, it is a good idea to move to the Botanical Garden. With its deep vegetation, there are many shadow spots where to take a break from the hot sunlight and just enjoy in the shadow the fresh breeze of Okinawa. The most famous spot of the Botanical Garden is the Alexander Palm Street. With its beautiful tall palm trees, this road is very suggestive and the ideal place to take great photos. We enjoyed the Southeast Botanical Gardens a lot! There is a lovely atmosphere, a good smell of flowers, and many activities and occasions to play with animals. It is the perfect way to spend a nice day with your family.
