In the middle of one of Naha’s busiest districts, the Fukushu-en Garden is an unexpected and pleasant oasis where to spend a couple of hours in relaxation. Located in the Kume area of Naha, once the main Chinese cultural area of the city, this quiet traditional Chinese garden was built in 1992 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the sister city relationship between Naha and Fuzhou, in China. The garden is divided into three areas: The Summer scenery, the Spring scenery, and the Fall and Winter sceneries together. A lovely pond crosses the majority of the garden and it is inhabited by turtles and koi carps which can be fed for the price of 100 yen. Feeding them is very easy: you will just have to go close to the water, and the carps will immediately come to you with their mouths open. There are a total of six pavilions scattered around the garden, some of them being on the top of rock hills that can be climbed with the help of stairs carved in the stone. The view from the top is very enjoyable, and you can just sit there relaxing for a while. It is also possible to enter a cavern at the basis of one of these hills and observe the waterfall from behind. With gates on the four cardinal directions, inscriptions on wood and stone, and a bridge with all twelve animals of Chinese Zodiac, this garden has a plethora of symbols and references to Chinese traditions and legends. The Fukushu-en Garden is a great place where to spend a few hours near Prefectural Office area and it is also a great proof of how precious the relationship between Okinawa and Fuzhou, which exists since centuries, is to the people of Naha.
