Okinogu Shrine is one of the eight shrines of the Ryukyu. It is located inside Onoyama Park, in Naha city, and it stretches on a little hill. It is an important shrine for many events and celebrations, but also a very pleasant shrine for a casual visit. The origins of Okinogu Shrine date back to 1451, during the period in which King Sho Kinpuku ruled. The shrine in Onoyama Park was built in 1975, after burning down during WWII and changing location many times. Did you Know? The shrine complex stretches from the foot of the hill and climbs until its top. Even though there are many ways to explore it, there is a route that should be followed. It starts by reaching the Honden, the main hall, and then visiting the nearby Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Yasaka Shrine and the prayer hall. These buildings are all on the same level of the Honden. A small torii gate will then open the way to the stairs that bring on the top of Mt. Tentozan, the tallest hill of the park, and a worship place since ancient times. The view from there is pretty nice, with a 360 degrees panorama on the park and its surrounding. There is then another small route to descend and reach the area with the Mizukami, Benzaten and Gongendo buildings. Here, visitors will find a very narrow passage inside the houses that made the complex, and also a praying spot with a little pond inhabited by koi carps.
