The Okinawa Urban Monorail, better known as Yui Rail, is the easiest and most convenient way to move around Naha city. And probably the cutest too! Compared to the complex transport system of bigger japanese cities like Tokyo or Osaka, the public transportation of Okinawa Prefecture sees in the Yui Rail its only public rail system and the first rail line since World War II. It consists of 19 stations distributed over 17 km, which the monorail can cover in roughly 37 minutes. The cost of a ride is not fixed, but depends on the distance. A passenger travelling the entirety of the line, from Naha International Airport to the last stop Tedako-Uranishi, would spend 370 yen. The monorail runs on an elevated track between 8 and 20 meters above the ground. It can reach the top speed of 65 km/h and it is a quite silent transportation. Passengers can use the OKICA, a rechargeable card that can be used only in Okinawa. From spring 2020, Yui Rail plans to integrate also the widely used Suica card in its service. Stations and the cars have plenty of English information and announcements, making the Yui Rail a very tourist-friendly means of transport. If you want to explore different areas of Naha city, Yui Rail will definitely be your top choice. Worth it also just for the pleasant ride!
