In the southern part of Okinawa, there is an ancient forest spreading over a valley disseminated with limestone caves. It is the Valley of Gangala, located just next to the Okinawa World theme park. Your tour in the Valley of Gangala will begin from the ticket office, which is located... in a cave! Inside the cave, there is the Cave Café, a very unique bar where customers can enjoy a drink or an ice cream while having stalactites pending on the top of their heads! Definitely something you don't see every day! The guide will then call the names of the visitors and make a quick introduction to the valley and to some simple rules to follow. You will receive some spray for mosquitos, and your own bottle with some fresh tea inside! The best way to start your adventure! Nature in the Valley of Gangala is wild. There are huge banyan trees with roots spreading in all directions and hundreds of lianas hanging from their branches. The guide will explain some interesting features about many types of vegetation. The tour will follow the course of a river, which sneaks among the verdant vegetation. You will hear the screams of many birds and the repetitive sound of cicadas. Halfway your tour, it will be time to enter a cave! There is very few artifical light in the cave, so you will receive a lantern to be able to walk in the darkness. At the end of the cave... there is a rock with a familiar shape waiting for you!
Caves in the valley of Gangala are packed with stalactites, just like Gyokusendo Cave. The discovery of fishing hooks, ornaments made of shells, and human bones in 2004 in the cave is the proof that people lived in there. One of the fish hooks discovered in the cave was made 20,000 years ago. Many excavation are still being conducted nowadays. Towards the end of the tour, you will be able to sit comfortably inside a cave, and the guide will provide a very interesting explaination about the people who used to live in the caves thousands years ago. The Valley of Gangala was opened to public in 2008. There are four daily tours in the Valley of Gangala, which last around 80 minutes, and the reservation is needed. Guides will speak only Japanese and a little bit of English, but they will provide foreign visitors with an English audio guide. Did you Know?
