Gyokusendo Cave is the second longest cave in Japan and the largest on the island. It is located inside the Okinawa World theme park, in southern Okinawa. Visitors will find the entrance of the cave on the left, after the main gate of the theme park. There is a queue to enter, which usually does not take more than 20 minutes. After showing your tickets to the staff, taking a commemorative picture and receiving the guide to the cave, be ready to descend into the depths of the Earth! The cave has more than one million stalactites (on the ceiling) and thousands of stalagmites (on the floor) made of coral combined with limestone. These natural pillars have been creating drop after drop since 300,000 years with a growing speed of 1 mm every 3 years. Gyokusendo cave stretched for 5 kilometers of which 850 meters are opened to the public. A metal walkaway runs left and right according to the walk of the cave. The path can be very slippery due to the many water drops falling from the ceiling, so we recommend to be careful. The temperature inside the cave is 21 degrees Celsius across the whole year, with an average humidity of 80%. Underground rivers flow in the cave, creating ponds and waterfalls. These conditions make an ideal habitat for many creatures like fish, crabs and shrimps. An examplar of these little cave dwellers can be seen in a display towards the end of the itinerary. Did you Know? During the walk inside the cave, visitors will find many famous spots, all rigorously natural. One is the "Blue fountain", a pond divided on two levels, illuminated by blue light for a more magical atmosphere. The "Ceiling of the Spears" is a stunning area with a higher concentration of thin stalactites hanging from the ceiling like thousands of spears. Finally, the "Toyoichido", a hall bigger than the main pavillon of Shuri Castle. If the long walk in the cave might get visitors tired, also due to the high humidity, there is no need to worry! A comfortable escalator at the exit of the cave will bring them back to the sunlight! Okinawa World and Gyokusendo Cave are included in our Southern Okinawa Bus Tour!
