Built on a steep hill of the Katsuren peninsula in Uruma, the Katsuren Castle Ruins has one of the most amazing stoneworks in Okinawa. With the Pacific Ocean on two sides, this castle is also called "Ocean Gusuku", which means "Ocean castle" in the Okinawan dialect. This castle was the residence of Lord Amawari in 15th century. Legend says that he was born in a peasant family and that in young age he was abandoned in the mountain because too sick, and was left there to die. The child managed to survive and grew up to become a strong leader who finally took over Katsuren Castle. It is also said that when in power Lord Awamari brought prosperity to the region and eased the burden of those who were suffering from maladministration. Lord Awamari died in a failed attemp to conquer Shuri Castle. In 2000, Katsuren Castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with nine other Gusuku Sites and Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. Among the Gusuku castles, this castle is said to be the one with the oldest construction date, being built in the early 14th century, by Aji Katsuren. In 2010, a coastal earthquake partially damaged the castle walls, which went through a process of restoration. Did you Know? The remains of Katsuren Castle give visitors a very solemn and majestic feeling. Looking at the ruins from below kind of reminds of some Camelot medieval atmosphere! Even though the walls are made of limestone blocks, they give a very smooth feeling, probably due to their wavy shape. After climbing the stairs to reach the top, the 180 degrees view on the blue ocean from the walls (100 meters above the sea level) is amazing. It makes easy to imagine the grandeur of this place centuries ago. Line many attractions in Okinawa, visiting the castle ruins at sunset will make everything even more suggestive. With free access and free parking area, Katsuren Castle Ruins represent a very interesting and fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site to visit when passing through the central area of Okinawa Island. We definitely recommend it for its historical value and incredible scenery!
