Naminoue Shrine is the most famous shrine of Naha. The name "Naminoue", which means "Shrine above the waves" well depicts the shrine, which is located on Wakasa coast, near Naminoue Beach, on the top of a cliff on the sea. The area where the shrine was built has been a sacred location since ancient times. In fact, it is believed to be a worship areas where locals offered prayers to Nirai Kanai for fertility and peace. The date of establishment of the shrine is not sure, but it was probably built in 1368, almost the same year in which Gokoku Shrine was opened. Due to its location, the shrine has always been a reference point for boats going in and out Naha port, for a safe journey in the sea. During the Ryukyu Kingdom, the King used to come to the shrine on New Year and prayed for the prosperity of all the nation. Did you Know? The shrine was destroyed many times during centuries, the first one being in 1633, then in 1635, when it burned down, and in 1803. Finally, the shrine was destroyed during WWII and it took 32 years to rebuild it, with its completion in 1993. In 2006, the shrine was designated as one of the Naha City Historical Sites of Cultural Property. To reach the shrine, which is on the top of the cliff, there is a ramp of stairs that leads to a big stone torii gate. Be careful to stay on the left side, as in the right side there often are cars and trucks moving. Past the torii gate, there is an area where visitors can purify themselves before praying in front of the Main Hall. The Chozuya (water ablution pavillon) of Naminoue Shrine has the beautiful shape of three dragons! If you want to purify your hands, make sure you read carefully the instructions, as there are a few important steps to be followed. Naminoue Shrine surely looks more like a traditional japanese shrine, more than a Ryukyuan shrine. The reason is that in 1890, during the Meiji Period, it was incorporated into the system of Japanese State Shinto. In front of the Main Hall, on the left side, there is a statue of Emperor Meiji. During the year, many events are held at Naminoue Shrine, like a dance competition, a sumo festival, and a singing contest.
